Three sanctuaries in the Dehradun Shivaliks- Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla were amalgamated into a large protected area and named Rajaji National Park in the year 1983 after the famous freedom fighter Late Sri C. Rajgopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji.

It possesses as many as 23 species of mammals and 315 avifauna species.

Wildlife in Rajaji National Park
Rajaji National Park is an interesting animal habitat on accounts of its location at the meeting point of the lesser Himalayan foothills and the beginning of the vast Indo-Gangetic plains. Rajaji National park is home of 23 species of mammals and 315 species of birds. There is largest population of elephants of Uttarakhand in the park. Other major wild animals found in the park are tiger, leopard, asian elephant, Bengal tiger, jungle cat, Himalayan yellow throated marten, sloth bear, Indian hare, Himalayan black bear, jackal, barking deer, sambhar, wild boar, Rhesus macaque, king cobra, Monitor lizard, phython.
The park also houses over four hundred bird species including the Himalayan Pied Kingfisher, Great Pied Hornbill, and the fire tailed sunbird. This area is the first staging ground after the migratory birds cross over the Himalayas into the Indian subcontinent
