Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary lies at a distance of 31Km East of Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. This sanctuary extends from the '15 Mile' Police check post up to the ridges bordering the famous RongChu and Tsomgo lakes. Covering an area of about 31 Sq Km and lying at an altitude of 3292m to 4116m, this sanctuary is perfect for trekking tours.

Flora in Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary
The sanctuary has rich natural vegetation cover comprising rare species of trees and plants that are hard to find. Some of the common vegetations seen in the Kyongnosla are Rhododendron, tall Juniper, silver Fir, Alpine flowers like Poppies, Orchid, Jentians, Primulas, wild Strawberries, rare Panax and Irises to name a few. The sanctuary also has various medicinal plants like Kutki, Nilo Bikh, and Jatamasi amongst others.
The area is snow covered often up to the month of May when flowers like Primulas & Rhododendron starts blossoming. By the month of June-July, these flowers are in full bloom. The flowering season of the sanctuary continues right through the month of October, when the beautiful Polygonum can be sighted.

The best time to visit Kyongnosla is from the months of April to August & October to November.

Wildlife in Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary
Various types of wildlife that can be seen here are Musk Deer, Himalayan Black Bear, Leopard, Blood Pheasant, Red Panda, Himalayan Marmot, Common Langur, Serow, Lesser Cats, Yellow throated Martens Weasel, Satyr Tragopan etc.
Both residential as well as migratory birds are spotted in the park. The Laughing Thrushes, the Satyr, the Redbilled Choughs, the Snow Partridges, the Redstarts, the Tragopan, the Rose Finches, the Kestrel, the Forktails, the Monal Pheasant and the Firetailed Sunbirds are some of the examples of bird population of Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary.
